MUYIL RUINS
If you are looking for some close by ruins to the city of Tulum and some jungle adventure, look no further than the Muyil Ruins. The Muyil Ruins, also known as Chunyaxche in Maya, are about a 15 minute drive from Tulum and are very beautiful as they are small and sit inside the jungle. Furthermore, at the end of the last structures you can follow a path that connects the ruins through a wooden pathway made through the marshes which allows you to walk all the way to the lagoon in the Sian Ka’an Biosphere and you take a tour! In addition to that, on that wooden pathway through the marshes there is a viewing tower that you can climb up and take in the view of the lagoon which is absolutely beautiful.
The Muyil Ruins see to have been one of the first human settlements in the area and suspected to have started around 350 B.C. Muyil is one of three coastal sites in the area which include the Tulum Ruins and the Xel-Ha. As the others, Muyil was a trading route because of its proximity to the Lagoon and trading goods included Jade, obsidian, chocolate among others. The pyramids that you will find in Muyil are very steep resembling some of the architecture of Tikal in Guatemala.
This architectural seems to be more tipical of the Peten region. While there is not much in terms of sculptures that you can see, the main pyramid in the back of it has two birds carved in to it. The birds you see are replicas and the originals sit enclosed to protect them from further deterioration.
Muyil is a small site that would take you about 1 hour to go through. If you don’t want to travel too far from Tulum and you want to take in more Maya ruins, this is a must as not only will you be able to see the ruins in a jungle a low key setting, but you can also take a tour through the lagoon in the Sian Ka’an biosphere in just 1/2 a day!
