COBA RUINS
The Coba Ruins, which the village of Cobá sits next to it with 1,000 + inhabitants, is about 45 kilometers (40 minute drive) from Tulum. Coba sits between two lagoons, Lago Coba and Lago Macanxoc, and is a big site to walk around which about a 6 to 7 mile to walk around the entire discovered site. The Coba Ruins early settlements date back to 100 B.C. to 1st century A.D. with all major construction taking place in the late classic Maya period which is between the 600 and 900 century A.D. A lot of the story of the city of Coba is well documented in the stelae, which are large rectangular limestone rocks that were chiseled and sculpted, which are found at most of the pyramid sites. These stelae document many events such as religious ceremonies, changes of rulers, conquests and other important events.
The Coba Ruins have long white limestone roads named “sacbe.” The sacbe conect four main pyramid sites which include Macanxoc, Coba, Chumuc Mul and Nohoch Mul. The Nohoch Mul pyramid group has one of the tallest pyramids named Ixmoja which stands at an impressive 42 meters in height. You can still climb Ixmoja and take in the impressive views of the jungle and the adjacent structures.
As part of it’s rich and ancient history, Coba seems to have been a major city having a population estimated as high as 50,000 people. This enabled them to control large tracts of farmland, water, trading routes and ports possibly including Tulum and Xel Ha.
If you visit Tulum, this is a must see site. As compared to the Tulum Ruins which have manicured lawns and in a way seem very modern like due to all the nice landscaping work, Coba is nestled in the jungle. This makes it for a fun jungle like adventure without having to veer off too much from the beaten path. To make your journey into the Coba Ruins a more pleasant and fun one, you can rent bikes on site which will make it fun and easier to ride around. You can also get bicycle cab to take you around the site.
