SIAN KAAN BIOSPHERE
In Maya language, Sian Ka’an means “originated from the skies.” The Sian Ka’aan sits right next to the town of Tulum and the general access points are through the village of Muyil or Punta Allen. In 1987, Sian Ka’an was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site; 1 year after it was established as a biosphere reserve by the Mexican government in 1986. The reserve covers a wide variety of habitats which include Coral Reefs in the Caribbean Sea, Lagoons, bays, Marshes, Land and Maya ruins such as the Muyil Ruins. The Muyil Ruins being one of the entrances to one of the Lagoons in the biosphere off the Cancun-Chetumal highway (about 15 minute drive from Tulum.)
The Sian Ka’an biosphere hosts a great variety of animal and plant species which include Dolphins (which go give birth in the bays), Manatee’s, crocodiles, Margay, Ocelot, Jaguarundi, Jaguar, Puma, over 300 species of birds, amphibians and many more. General access to the reserve is restricted to licensed tour operators o cooperatives composed of local fishermen. If you want a great escape from the hectic city life and want to see nature at its best, you need to venture into the Sian Ka’an biosphere. It sheer beauty and wide array of animal species make it for a great and unique experience.
